Asia Spa Academy was set up in light of the rapidly rising development and innovative growth opportunities in the spa and wellness industry in the Asia Pacific region that have grown exponentially over the past several years. Established in 2005 Asia Spa Academy was founded as a response to meet market demands for quality training and to raise, develop and uphold professional standards of the spa and wellness industry. It is dedicated to networking highly qualified spa professionals at all levels and developing their careers to ensure spa, hotel, and resort clients achieve a superior guest experience that far exceeds their expectations.

ASA (Asia Spa Academy) Board of Advisors and faculty is committed to supporting the development of its students. ASI has a strong learning culture; where individual students recognize the value of his/her personal contributions to the spa industry and to society as a whole.

Founding Chairwoman

Dr. Theresa Chew-Tan


Dr. Chew is co-founder of Asia Spa Academy and consultants to leading spas in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and China. She created many firsts in the Asia Spa Industry, President of Spa and Wellness Association 2004-2009, Director of International Spa Association and Director of ISPA Foundation from 1995-2002.

Vice President

Ms. Deborah Torres Patel


Deborah is Vice President of Asia Spa Academy and an internationally acclaimed author, speaker, consultant and educator. She has worked in 65 countries and is the creator of a unique marketing & communication training program called Expressing You! With 24 years teaching experience she has served as a consultant to hotel and spa clients for over 14 years.

Dr. & Professor Emeritus Roberta Leung

Roberta has been active in the hotel, tourism and hospitality industry for over 20 yrs and has been teaching in 14 universities internationally for 20 yrs. She is a specialist consultant and expert educator in Human Resource Management and Hospitality Management and has worked with Regent International Hotels, Century International Hotels, Westin International Hotels and Inter-Continental Hotels. She has visited reviewed over a hundred fifty spas around the world.

Mr. Bernard Burt (Spectacular Spas)


Burt authored “100 Best Spas of the World” for the Globe Pequot Press, “Fodor’s Healthy Escapes” for Random House, and spa news at SpaGoer.com. Founding director of the International Spa Association (ISPA), he has staged conferences in the U.S. and Europe, shared insights at the London Spa Show, aboard the Queen Mary 2, and in Singapore for ASA. Currently he is working on a new trilogy, “Spectacular Spas,” to be published in 2010.

Professor Gerard Bodeker (Spectacular Spa)

Professor Bodeker works internationally in the wellness and complementary medicine fields and has published extensively on traditional & complementary medicine. An Australian, whose doctoral studies were at Harvard, he is a senior faculty member in public health at Oxford University and Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University, New York. He is also editor of WHO's Global Atlas of Traditional, Complementary & Alternative Medicine.

Ms. Suzanne Ng


Suzanne is CEO of Conceptasia Management & Consultants Inc and has opened more than 15 spas around the world, including the award winning The Spa at Mandarin Oriental New York and Tokyo, and worked with top international spa brands Mandara Spa, Westin Hotel, Spa Botanica, Shangri-La, Lotte Hotel, Raffles Hotel and has developed award winning spa projects around the world.
